Warped Perceptions
of Self
The idea of a warped sense of self was originally inspired by the main character of the fiction novel Milk Fed by Melissa Broder, it soon spiraled into a personal testimony and journal of sorts about how it feels to identify as non-binary and my thought process behind presenting as feminine despite no longer identifying as a woman. The piece is typographic and brash, the words are weighted with passion. However, there are also times where the words are small and quiet. These are the words that felt more intimate, the ones that were harder to say for the fear of being too personal and honest.
The book features a beautiful poem written by my dear friend AJ Lawrence, and it helps break up the two chapters within this book perfectly.
Warped Perceptions of The World
The Warped Perceptions series is an honest reflection of how I see myself and how I see the world around me. These so-called ‘Warped Perceptions’ are centred around the idea of experiences shaping us as people and determining how we understand and navigate the world as it is presented to us. Warped Perceptions of Self is about my own experiences of identifying as a non binary person, whereas Warped Perceptions of The World is presenting experiences through edited photographs, allowing your own ‘warped perceptions’ to form based on your own past.
All photographs featured were taken and edited by myself, and both pieces were bound by hand using embroidery thread and a single sheet binding stitch.
Warped Perceptions of The World represents how each person has their own warped perceptions because of our own unique experiences that have shaped us into who we are today. Different places or objects can hold sentimental value, heighten strong emotions, or trigger a memory recall. As you move through the piece you may experience these different emotions or memory recalls as the photographs become more and more unrecognizable, leaving them completely up to your interpretation.
